The book that helped me overcome my prejudice against poetry--I carried "Paris Spleen" around with me for a couple of weeks after I first read it, and kept turning back to certain poems as I went about my daily errands. Even though it's nearly 150 years old it seems as timely and contemporary as it must have seemed when it was first published--absolutely top-notch.

An elegant, accurate, and readable translation of this wonderful little book that can revolutionize your way of seeing and thinking. Some newer, and in some ways, better translations have appeared since this one became the "standard," but it's still a good buy and a sure bet for reading pleasure.

This is a wonderful book -- Baudelaire's prose poems perfectly capture the spirit of 19th century Paris as it rushes into modernism. Don't be seduced by prettier editions of this book -- it is crucial to get the Varese translation! Also, Walter Benjamin's early to mid twentieth century critique of Baudelarie should not be missed.

This book could use better editing

I am no expert on Dracula but my historical sensibilities have been offended by several serious errors in the text. Here are just two examples: on pages 9-10 Mr. Trow writes:
"...Oliver Cromwell, whose head ... may or may not have been separated from his body..."
It is a well-known fact that Cromwell's head definitely had been separated from his body, and found its lonely grave only in 1960.
On page 123 we find the following fragment about Jan Zizka:
"...he had fought for the Teutonic Order against the Poles...
Losing an eye at Tannenberg in 1410 fighting for Wenceslas..."
These two incomplete sentences contain four mistakes. First, Zizka fought FOR the Poles AGAINST the Teutonic Order. Second, he did so at the battle of Tannenberg in 1410, therefore he couldn't fight there for Wenceslas. Third, the unnamed battle from the first sentence and the battle of Tannenberg/Grunwald are one and the same event. Fourth, Zizka lost an eye in his adolescence.
In short, this book could really benefit from knowledgeable editing.

Vampirism and the Real Dracula

Although the book has several chapters about vampirism and Bram Stoker's Dracula, the remaining chapters about Vlad Tepes are very detailed and a good read. Vlad surely was one of the most cruel tyrants ever and his atrocities are described with much detail. Contemporaries wrote about the "untold abuses, sad murders and mutilations by the cruel tyrant Dracula" and the author discusses the sources and their reliability by their level of interest in blackening Vlad. According to Trow, many of Vlad Dracula's acts can be interpreted as efforts to enforce his own moral code upon his country and to strengthen and modernise the central government at the expense of the nobility, because they had repeatedly undermined the power of the Wallachia's rulers (and buried alive his elder brother).

An interesting section describes the `usual' way of impalement and the most likely way used by Vlad in the case of mass impalements or when a mother was impaled together with her baby.

About the Author
Reginald Jacques was born in 1894 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire and studied at Queen's College, Oxford, where he later became organist and director of music in 1926. Reginald Jacques was also conductor of the Oxford Orchestra Society from 1930 to 1936. From 1931 to 1960 he was conductor of The Bach Choir in London. In 1936 he founded his own Jacques Orchestra, which he conducted until 1960. In 1954 he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He died in 1969. John Rutter was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has edited or co-edited various choral anthologies, including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975 to 1979 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 he formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers. He now divides his time between composition and conducting and is sought after as a guest conductor for the world's leading choirs and orchestras. Born in 1919, David Willcocks began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, later winning scholarships to Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. Following war service, he was elected Fellow of King's College, and later became Organist of Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals, conducting the Three Choirs Festival whilst at Worcester. Willcocks returned to King's College, Cambridge as Director of Music from 1957-1974, with the first collection of his arrangements in the Carols for Choirs series publishing in 1961. He was Director of Music at the Royal College of Music from 1974-1984, and was knighted in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Honours List in 1977. Willcocks also conducted The Bach Choir for 38 years, retiring in 1998. Sir David died in September 2015.

great book of Xmas carols with 4 part harmony

Got this as our FacStaff choir used it for our Christmas Concert this year. Great arrangements, good 4 part harmonies and good variety. What more can you ask for. If you love Christmas and love to sing both secular and religious carols, this is the place to start for any group that you are a part of.

A solid starting point for Christmas choral concert music!

Carols for Choirs 1 comprises 50 carols, mostly for mixed SATB voices, well blended from both traditional and modern sources as well as secular versus sacred. Several familiar texts such as "Away in a Manger", "Coventry Carol" and "I Saw Three Ships" appear in two different musical settings which will give choirs the ability to present a wider variety of music to informed audiences that might well be jaded with the more typical Christmas fare.

Some pieces such as Mendelssohn's "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" or "O Come All Ye Faithful" are presented with the well known upper voice descant and oft heard harmonies that are so familiar it's probable even "con belto" fortissimo audience participants might be heard singing in four parts.

In marked contrast, other pieces such as "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" or JS Bach's harmonization of "O Little One Sweet", while not requiring virtuosity, will require careful practice, study and complete attention to choral detail such as dynamics, endings and articulation in order to pull off a polished, crowd-pleasing a cappella performance.

Highly recommended for regular choral singers and conductors.

Captive Soldier/Citizen not a Nazi

In reading this book I was struck by the humanity and empathy I could really feel for a person swept up into a conflict whose ideology meant very little to him yet had a deep love of his Country, home, family and ultimately his own life. A very young idealist, hungry for adventure and glory in his role in the war, very quickly becomes only a streetwise realist fighting for his own life and those of his comrades in a daily struggle against an ever increasingly strong foe. I have read several accounts written by German Soldiers in World War two. I have little compassion for those in a position of command and leadership, but find real feeling for the enlisted Man who under terrible conditions...endured. This is such a story. May we someday learn that War...all War is a waste and as individuals ..to have the courage to stand up against where our Leaders take us.

About the Author
Stratis Papaioannou is Associate Professor of Classics at Brown University. He has published extensively on Byzantine literature, especially on the history of rhetoric and literary subjectivity and is currently preparing an edition of Michael Psellos' letters for the Teubner Series as well as a volume of translations with Psellos' texts. He has co-edited Byzantine Religious Culture: Studies in Honor of Alice-Mary Talbot (2011). Recent articles include: Fragile Literature: Byzantine Letter-Collections and the Case of Michael Psellos (2012), Michael Psellos on Friendship and Love: Erotic Discourse in Eleventh-Century Constantinople (2011), Byzantine Enargeia and Theories of Representation (2011) and Byzantine Mirrors: Self-Reflection in Medieval Greek Writing (2010).

Focuses on small spaces, temporary living

I really thought I'd love this book, because I do enjoy reading little snippets on Erin's blog. However, it seemed a bit scattered and, dare I say, generic. There are so many simple-living books available these days, so it seems like everything has already been said and done, and this book seemed to be much of the same, and often in a generalized "brushed over" format (no big "YES!" moments and I found myself skimming over a lot of repeat info). I fully agree with most of the ideas, views and opinions that Erin writes about, in regards to simplicity, sustainability, etc., but a lot of what is written is just repetition from the blog. I also wasn't drawn into this book as I have with other books on simple living, because it is primarily focused on living in a small space with an underlying feeling of temporary living. It's pretty much a given that if you live in a small space, life will feel less cluttered with less stuff. While I agree that making any big investments or decorating decisions while living in a temporary apartment is unwise, there isn't much helpful information for those who are living in permanent homes (apartment or freestanding, with or without children). While I get the "write about what you know and all that," I don't think this book will be as appealing to the average person who is looking for advice on simplifying their lives...there are better options available.

Wonderful book

Our youngest child went off to college last Fall making us Empty Nesters. My task for the next few months? Decluttering so my husband and I can downsize to a smaller place. Inexperienced at an entire household declutter, I Googled ‘decluttering’, ‘simple living’, etc. and, among other things, up popped Erin Boyle’s blog, Reading My Tea Leaves. I found hints on decluttering and set up my “trash”, “Goodwill”, “think about” and “keep” piles, then set to work sorting 28 years of worth of detritus, accumulated while raising kids. And while I decluttered …. I also got hooked on Erin’s Blog: her beautiful writing style, her ideas, and her photography.

Erin Boyle’s book, Simple Matters includes a few of her best blog essays, and also, a series of brand new essays. The book is not merely about decluttering, but about embracing a simpler lifestyle in the broadest sense of the word. As Erin puts it, “We can’t maintain a clutter-free home if we don’t also change our approach to accumulation in the first place.” Or how about this gem? “We’re under the false impression that we’re not in control of our spaces, when the opposite is true.” Woven throughout the book are simple statements like the aforementioned, containing profound thoughts about our American lifestyle: does accumulating things make us happier? do the ethics of clothes companies we buy from, matter? does your physical clutter translate to mental clutter; feeling overwhelmed? do the things we own work for the space they inhabit in our house? If you stop and think about her questions you’ll see that, not only are they good for the Earth, they are transformative for the way we discern what we want in our homes and in our lives. Erin is doing all of us a favor by challenging the status quo: “more is more” …. brought to you by corporate ad men, who are paid to get us to spend.

In response to her own questions, Erin offers us ideas to try. Not MarthaStewartComplicated ideas to try, but ideas that are doable. She provides resources for personal care items that don’t contain harmful chemicals, clothes that are ethically sourced, stores that sell quality products that don't break your bank account, gift ideas that are 'home made' and, dare I say, classy, etc. The book is dense with information, and this girl makes a whole lot of sense. As I looked at photos of Erin’s little daughter playing with wooden toys, then looked at the bizarre colors and bizarre-er faces of my daughter’s old, plastic Polly Pockets - sitting in the Goodwill pile - I knew at some deep level that Erin’s suggestions were worth considering. This is a wonderful book; an important book - and I truly hope many people will read and consider the ideas she offers us.

It was OK...

Don't expect any "aha" moments about living simply. It's a nice sentiment but full of a lot of conceptual information and not a whole lot of actionable tips that you can't get from the blog or a dozen other books about living simply and sustainably. Many of the photos are small, too, so it's not a good visual/coffee table book, either.

Exploring Advice - A Must-Read, Especially for Financial Planners.

As someone who delivers hundreds of financial plans in a year and uses MGPro/Finametrica, I found this book a great read. It goes deeper into who a fiduciary should be. It gets under the skin of it and examines the emotional thread that runs between and ties numbers together. The interviews are conversational, practical. The book represents how financial plans and fiduciary actions go together to help clients reach financial life benchmarks. This work is an honorable effort and worth a read from professionals on the front lines and seeking to be fiduciaries. This is the future. Kevin's book should be a foundational read for the new world.
