Those principles included modern theories of atomic and molecular structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and thermodynamics. In addition, Dr. Pauling attempted to correlate the theories with descriptive chemistry, the observed properties of substances, to introduce the student to the multitude of chemical substances and their properties.
In this extensively revised and updated third edition, the Nobel Prize–winning author maintains an excellent balance between theoretical and descriptive material, although the amount of descriptive chemistry has been decreased somewhat, and the presentation of the subject, especially in relation to the nonmetals, has been revised in such a way as to permit greater correlation with the electronic structure of atoms, especially electronegativity.
The principles of quantum mechanics are discussed on the basis of the de Broglie wavelength of the electron. The quantized energy levels of a particle in a box are derived by means of a simple assumption about the relation of the de Broglie waves to the walls of the box. No attempt is made to solve the Schrödinger wave equation for other systems, but the wave functions of hydrogen-like electrons are presented  and discussed in some detail, and the quantum states for other systems are also covered. Statistical mechanics is introduced before thermodynamics, and the discussion of thermodynamics is based on it. This arrangement reflects the author's belief that beginning students can understand statistical mechanics better than chemical thermodynamics.
Aimed at first-year college students who plan to major in chemistry or closely related fields, the book is written in a logical, clear, and understandable style. In addition, many excellent figures are included, along with numerous problems and 75 pages of appendices covering such topics as symmetry of molecules and crystals, hybrid bond orbitals, and magnetic properties of substances.

About the Author

Linus Pauling: Two-Time Nobel Laureate
In 1985 Dover reprinted Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry, a well-known older book by Linus Pauling and E. Bright Wilson. This book had been first published fifty years earlier and remarkably still found readers in 1985, and still does today, twenty-five years further on.

The first edition of Pauling's General Chemistry was a short book of less than 250 pages published in 1944, during World War II. Three years later, it had more than doubled in size to almost 600 pages, and the 1953 edition was over 700 pages. Fifteen years later, for the 1970 edition, it reached its final size and configuration at almost 1,000 pages ― and that is the edition which Dover reprinted in 1988. Dr. Pauling's one request at that time was that we keep the price affordable for students.

Linus Pauling is of course the only Dover author to win two Nobel prizes, for Chemistry in 1954 and for Peace in 1962; he is the only winner in history of two unshared Nobel Prizes.

full of insight but eccentric

This is an interesting, if somewhat dated and eccentric textbook by the man who was probably the leading chemist of the twentieth century. It is full of interesting insight, and written with real flair, so much unlike the typical textbook today produced by the textbook publishing machines.

Let me give a couple of examples, good and bad, of what makes this book interesting, but also exasperating.

The book is the only freshman chemistry text I know of that has a derivation of the Boltzmann distribution P ~ e^(-E/kT), a very basic relation in the kinetic theory of gases and in fact in all of statistical physics. The derivation is simpler than most, which makes it a real jewel especially at this level, where most people would think it doesn't belong.

On the other hand, the section on chemical bonding, which is actually where Pauling made his reputation, is very eccentric, like the author, so much so that it makes the book unsuitable as the sole text for a course. It is all based on sp3 hybrid orbitals. As far as I can tell, sp2 and sp hybrids are never mentioned. With the sp3 story, Pauling is able to account surprisingly well for some systematics of bond lengths. Whether this is fortuitous or not, I don't know, but it is interesting. On the other hand, without sp2 and sp hybrids, he is completely unable to give the standard, very simple, beautiful account of bond angles. A student learning introductory chemistry from this text who then went into organic chemistry would soon be at a disadvantage without knowing the theory of hybrid orbitals that everyone else would get from any of the standard contemporary texts.

My recommendation: use this text as a very insightful, quirky supplement. The price is certainly right.

The text that comes closest, in my opinion, in seriousness, if not eccentricity, is the contemporary text by Oxtoby and coauthors. It is too highbrow though for most college introductory chemistry courses.

I enjoyed this book, even though it is more than 50 years old. It's the work of a master, who actively participated in the development of modern chemistry and was close to many of the scientists that made major contributions to the discipline.

About the Author
Terence Conran is one of the world's best-known designers, restaurateurs and retailers. In the 1960s he founded Habitat - the chain of homeware stores that brought good, modern design within reach of the general population for the very first time. Over the subsequent 50 years Terence built another group of companies centred around design, retailing, restaurants and hotels. Today, Conran Associates owns restaurants and shops in eight cities throughout the world and a design business serving many international clients that includes architecture and interior design, product and graphic design and brand licensing. In January 2011 Conran Associates began working with Marks & Spencer in the UK, designing an exclusive range of homewares for the store. In 2012 Conran Associates signed a deal to collaborate with US retail giant jcpenney to design an exclusive range of furniture, lighting and accessories for the home. The initial collection launched in spring 2013 into 300 jcpenney stores throughout the US and there will be new ranges launching each spring and autumn. Terence Conran was knighted for his services to design in 1983 and has been provost of the Royal College of Art in London. In 1982 he opened the very first museum in the world dedicated to design, which is now the celebrated Design Museum in London, due to move to new premises in 2015 thanks to a massive expansion programme.

Probably the best Heath and Fitness book I've every read

I really enjoyed reading this book. It explains, at a layman's level, the science behind why some foods are bad for you, and others aren't. Some of the explanations get pretty detailed, which I liked, but my wife didn't. Fortunately, the book has many illustrations, and always summarizes the information at the end of each chapter.

I was really surprised by some of the information. For example, grass fed cattle actually create a different kind of fat than grain/corn fed cattle. Our bodies are fine with the fat from grass fed beef, but fat from grain fed beef can cause inflammation. I had never heard this before, and am still skeptical, but I figure it can't hurt to make the switch.

This book makes it clear that insulin sensitivity is a big deal, and even goes as far as recommending a blood glucose meter to determine how much carbs your body can handle in a meal. Since reading this book, I've increased my protein intake, and reduced my carbs. When I do eat carbs, I try to get them from vegetables, while avoiding grain/bread.

Some other information you'll find in this book:
- Why fructose is worse that the glucose you get from eating starch
- Why you should cook with coconut oil, and use olive oil on salad.
- Why HIIT exercise is recommended.
- Why sleep is so important, and the maintenance that occurs within the brain while sleeping
- What insulin resistance is, and why it's so bad
- Why cholesterol is not bad
- That LDL is not cholesteral, and why sdLDL is bad, and lbLDL it good
- How to avoid having your body make the bad sdLDL

Those were just of the top of my head; there is much more interesting information in this book.

I'm not qualified to say all the information is correct or not, but if it is, the reasons we all thought people got heart disease have been wrong. I definitely feel I got my money's worth from this book, hopefully you will too.

I got the paperback edition directly from Dragon Door, but felt so strongly about this book that I had to leave a review here. This is it. This book fully and completely explains what's going wrong with so many of the failed and flawed approaches to weight loss and optimum health in the past. If you've ever been confused by the results of a lipid panel, get this book asap. If you don't know where to start on the path to a healthier lifestyle, get this book asap. If you're already in great shape but need to optimize your sleep, stress management, and fine tune your exercise then absolutely get this book. 600+ pages may seem like a lot, but they're chock full of answers and insights that could only have come from the combined knowledge and experience of Dr. Chris Hardy and Marty Gallagher. Can't wait to read it through again, this is life changing info!

With all the initial confusion and upgrade hassles that followed the release of Windows 10, I breathed a sigh of relief when I received Beezix Software Services Windows 10 Introduction Quick Reference guides. The four 8.5-by-11-inch, laminated crib sheets pack a surprisingly succinct assemblage of how-to tricks and tips for mastering Windows 10.
Instead of searching online to figure out Win10 s myriad setup, navigation, and other common functions, I found most of my answers on one of the well-organized pages. To squeeze in all the information, Beezix uses both its own original icons as well as ones found in Windows and then combines them with step-by-step numbering to guide users along.
Using the guide, I was surprised to discover some Win10 functions that are easier to use than they initially seemed. For example, the cards showed how to configure the various ways to sign in to the operating system (picture, typed, and PIN passwords). Good, but could be better

OK, the font is way too small, but given the amount of information included in this effort, and the utility of having a one page guide to the new OS, I have to give it a pass. As a "Quick Reference Guide ' it dies the job, ordering just the essential information in an orderly fashion and in the sequence in which it is needed. Would it have been too much to ask to give us two pages? I think not, but I found this useful as long as I have my trusty magnifying glass by my side. The irony is that this would have been great for seniors if it were in large print. If a senior, try Windows 10 For Seniors For Dummies.

WHERE TO GO

For visitors, deciding where to go can mean juggling with distance, money and time. You could spend months driving around the Outback, exploring the national parks, or just hanging out at beaches; or you could take an all-in two-week "Reef, Rock and Harbour" package, encompassing Australia’s outstanding trinity of "must sees".

Both options provide thoroughly Australian experiences, but neither will leave you with a feeling of having more than scraped the surface of this vast country. The two big natural attractions are the two-thousand-kilometre-long Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast, with its complex of islands and underwater splendour, and the brooding monolith of Uluru (Ayers Rock), in the Northern Territory’s Red Centre. You should certainly try to see them, although exploration of other parts of the country will bring you into contact with more subtle but equally rewarding sights and opportunities. The cities are surprisingly cosmopolitan: waves of postwar immigrants from southern Europe and, more recently, Southeast Asia have done much to erode Australia’s Anglocentrism. Each Australian state has a capital stamped with its own personality, and nowhere is this more apparent than in New South Wales where glamorous Sydney has the iconic landmarks of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Elsewhere, the sophisticated café society of Melbourne (Victoria) contrasts with the vitality of Brisbane (Queensland). Adelaide, in South Australia, has a human-scale and old-fashioned charm, while Perth, in Western Australia, camouflages its isolation with a leisure-oriented urbanity. In Hobart, capital of Tasmania, you’ll encounter fine heritage streetscapes and get a distinct maritime feel. The purpose-built administrative centre of Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory, often fails to grip visitors, but Darwin’s continuing revival enlivens an exploration of the distinctive "Territory".

Away from the suburbs, with their satellite shopping malls and quarter-acre residential blocks, is the transitional "bush", and beyond that the wilderness of the Outback – the quintessential Australian experience. Protected from the arid interior, the East Coast has the pick of the country’s greenery and scenery, from the north’s tropical rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef to the surf-lined beaches further south. The east coast is backed by the Great Dividing Range, which steadily decreases in elevation as it extends from Mount Kosciusko (2228m) in New South Wales north into tropical Queensland. If you have time to spare, a trip to often-overlooked Tasmania, across the Bass Strait, is worthwhile: you’ll be rewarded with vast tracts of wilderness as well as landscapes almost English in their bucolic qualities.

WHEN TO GO

Australia’s climate has become less predictable in recent times, although like the rest of the planet the country has rarely had stable weather patterns over the last few thousand years. Recently observed phenomena, such as an extended drought in the eastern Outback, the cyclic El Niño effect, and even the hole in the ozone layer – which is disturbingly close to the country – are probably part of a long-term pattern.

Visitors from the northern hemisphere should remember that, as early colonials observed, in Australia "nature is horribly reversed": when it’s winter or summer in the northern hemisphere, the opposite season prevails Down Under. Although this is easy to remember, the principle becomes harder to apply to the transitional seasons of spring and autumn. To confuse things further, the four seasons only really exist outside of the tropics in the southern half of the country. Here, you’ll find reliably warm summers at the coast with regular, but thankfully brief, heatwaves in excess of 40°C. Head inland, and the temperatures rise further. Winters, on the other hand, can be miserable, particularly in Victoria, where the short days add to the gloom. Tasmania’s highlands make for unpredictable weather all year round, although summer is the best time to explore the island’s outdoor attractions.

In the coastal tropics, weather basically falls into two seasons. The best time to visit is during the hot and cloudless Dry (from April to November), with moderate coastal humidity maintaining a pleasant temperature day and night and cooler nights inland. In contrast, the Wet – particularly the "Build Up" in November or December before the rains – is very uncomfortable, marked by stifling, near-total humidity. As storm clouds gather, rising temperatures, humidity and tension can provoke irrational behaviour in the psychologically unacclimatized – something known as "going troppo". Nevertheless, the mid-Wet’s daily downpours and enervating mugginess can be quite intoxicating, compelling a hyper-relaxed inactivity for which these regions are known; furthermore the countryside – if you can reach it – looks its best at this time.

Australia’s interior is an arid semi-desert with very little rain, high summer temperatures and occasionally freezing winter nights. Unless you’re properly equipped to cope with these extremes, you’d be better off coming here during the transitional seasons between April and June, or October and November.

In general, the best time to visit the south is during the Australian summer, from December to March, though long summer holidays from Christmas through January mean that prices are higher and beaches more crowded at this time. In the tropical north the best months are from May to October, while in the Centre they are from October to November and from March to May. If you want to tour extensively, keep to the southern coasts in summer and head north for the winter.

Do not travel to Australia without this book

This book was a lifesaver for us on our three week vacation to Australia. The maps within it were fantastic especially on our four day drive up the coast. It was very helpful with regard to accommodation, and finding tourist information offices. We didn't leave our room without it on any day of our trip.

Typical Rough Guide consistensy

Now in its tenth edition, this guide has been refined into a really good book. As with many things Aussie, this book has an outdoorsy bent. Coverage of Australia's truly incredible natural sites is thorough. The absolutely amazing Atherton Tablelands get nice treatment, and are a MUST for any trip to Australia.

There's far less history and social content than some other Rough Guides but, that said, this book is typical Rough Guide density with encyclopedic coverage. The best thing about this book is that you're not likely to find a place in this vast country without at least a few words written about it. The chapters about particularly remote sections of the country are well done and fascinating to read. Cultural and historical contexts are well done, not just filler material. A good guide book should make you more anxious to get on with your trip. This one has that effect on me.

I'd like to see a bit more narrative about significant architecture and important institutions, and the book needs a nice new set of maps. There are few really good ones in here.

Keep in mind that Australia is a huge country, and distances can be vast. Cultural and natural attractions are so numerous that no single guidebook will bring them all to you. This one does it better than other books, in my opinion. The editions are frequent enough so that listings are relatively up-to-date, but no guidebook for a place this large and dynamic can be perfect or completely comprehensive. Keep that in mind.

Quantity does not equal quality - this book brings it all together

I was in Australia for 2 years. I was based in Perth, but traveled to Exmouth, Melbourne, Sydney, Hervey Bay and the Gold Coast.

Initially, I looked at Lonely Planet WA and could not understand why Rough Guide's section on Western Australia was so much smaller. When I used L.P. I realised it was because it contained a lot of stuff that was irrelevant to a tourist.

Rough Guide has all the salient points (and directs you to the right place when necessary) and is pretty user friendly.

I would certainly recommend it for your travels.

While I usually review CDs and DVDs as well as entertainment related books here on Amazon, in my major occupation, I am a CPA with over 40 years of experience so I feel qualified to provide an accurate review of this book, which as offered to me by Amazon as part of their Vine Reviewer program.

This is one in the series of “For Dummies” books now published by Wiley. The “Dummies” series goes back to 1991 when Dan Gookin wrote “DOS for Dummies”. To date over 1700 (!) “Dummies” titles have been published. The topics range from the sublime to the ridiculous. Most of the titles share a format in common. Chapters begin with a related cartoon; There are “remember” and “tip” icons and all see to run about 300 pages. In a series this large, some are too simple and some too complicated.

This volume is different. There are no cartoons, no “tips” and no “remember” sections. The first half (178 pages) consists of “questions” (some with single word answers, some multiple choice, and some which require calculation. In a few cases the author gives you basic assumptions and then asks you to calculate the answer. The answers (with a 1-2 sentence explanation) fill the second half of the book. I guess you could jump from the front to the back as you go through the questions (which are grouped by sun topics) or you could write in the answers in the small blank spaces that separate the questions, and then “grade” yourself.

This is really a review quiz and you should know that going in. This will not teach you “Accounting”; there are other “For Dummies” books that do that and I’ve reviewed many of them on Amazon.

One odd thing I noticed was “Authors’ Names” on the front cover. Kenneth Boyd is owner of a Test Prep company and he is listed first. Then (below his name) is that of Kate Mooney. When you open the book you will see only Mooney’s name on the title page. And, in the back – under “About the Author” – it only gives Mooney’s credentials (she heads the Accounting Dept at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota.

So if you are taking accounting courses, or have been out of the accounting field for a number of years and want to “brush up” on your knowledge, you might gain something from this book. Otherwise I can’t really recommend it.

Great--for the Right Person

I got this book for two reasons: in my new job I need to know a wider range of accounting principles than at my old one and I am planning to go to graduate school and one of the courses I am likely to take will entail accounting. So this seemed like it might be a useful book. It was. It’s not, however, a book for the novice so much in that it doesn’t really go into the details of why things work the way they do; you need to have some idea of what those are already before picking up this book. Having said that, this is the perfect book for someone (like me) who is a bit rusty on her accounting principles. Because this book can (and to my way of thinking should) be used as both a review and then as a practice book. Basically, you can go through this book twice. The first time, by reading the questions and then then answers which are explained and the second time by actually doing the problems. On your first go, you might (if you’re quite rusty) create some flash cards for yourself with the concepts that you are either quite rusty or think you’ll quite useful. For me, for example, this seemed quite useful for a project I am currently working on “To apply the lower cost or market value when valuing inventory, the company must determine the market value, which is defined as the cost to buy the product from the usual suppliers at the period’s end, the replacement cost. Then, the company must value the inventory on the balance sheet at the lower of the cost or the market value.”

In short, this is a very useful book for someone who’s rusty in accounting and needs a refresher or who needs some supplementary accounting practice. I highly recommend it to those people.

An excellent refresher and supplement to instructional studies

This is really a very useful book - if you work as a bookkeeper, auditor, or CPA - heck, even if you are interested in a CFA - it's good to go back and see if you can understand fluidly the underlying concepts of financial accounting. Of course, there are many questions that are extremely simple. No question here is going to require any obscure or arcane fact, everything is based on real world business situations. The book is broken down by sections - "Concentrating on Sales", "Recording Transaction with Equity Sources of Capital" and "Building a Balance Sheet", for example. The answers to each question go into the 'why' as well as the 'what', which makes this such a good book (the answers make up more than half of the book's total volume).

This is not a stand alone work, meaning you have to know about accounting to use it - how debits and credit work, for example, or what a trial balance is - but with any good instructional book you will see immediate value here. I studied it side by side with Restaurant Financial Basics (I work in a nightclub) and the combination was excellent. My bosses and coworkers noticed immediately that I was improving, and the questions I was asking about the papers crossing my desk started actually opening dialogues rather than generating simple explanatory answers. I am also studying both accounting and advanced Excel techniques at Udemy to further monetize my skills.

Through all of it, I will continue using this book, and occasionally referring back and doing intermittent drills to push it all in. If you re studying accounting, this is a great supplement. If you're just interested, or want to learn more, you are best served by a text that functions more as a tutorial. But if you go that route, get a copy of this as well to reinforce your studies. Other than job security, it really is genuinely interesting to see the underbelly of business, and to really see how it all works, which is something you can only get with a firm knowledge of accounting and financial reporting - forensics of every problem and inefficiency with solutions behind every business entity. It can be fun!
