Short but good!

The book is priced like a full length novel, but it is a short story. I have read the young samurai books and loved them, but this seems to be just along the same story line. Anyway I would certainly buy a full length book about this character, but not another short story at $9.99. I suggest if you like his other books then give it a try, but I was expecting more.

A Very Good Read

I found this to be a quick fun read. The book definitely is geared towards the younger reader, say about a 3rd/4th grade reading level. So this book is a fairly short one, but the message sent through this book packs a pretty good punch. Taka as a young Ninja wanna be is desperate to advance to become a Ninja. Though due the fact that he failed the first time, and thanks to some bullies he is afraid he is not cut out to be a Ninja. But circumstances arise and Taka along with his friend Cho rise to the occasion, and prove that to do the right thing you don't have to be a Ninja. The message of not giving up and pursuing your goals no matter if you have a set back I think is a great message to send to kids, even if they can not see the message from the book that they are reading. This book is on my list to pass along to my 3rd grade daughter who I thing will also enjoy the story.

Pure Vanilla. Pure Inspiration

I will never underestimate the magic of vanilla again. We use the term 'vanilla' derogatorily, to mean plain, boring, ordinary. How completely misguided! Having spent the last week scraping the caviar out of the beans, infusing syrups, steeping pods, and immersing vanilla in salts and sugars, I see vanilla for the complex, exotic, and intriguing ingredient that it is. And, as Shauna writes, "It's high time to catapult this delicious ingredient into the superstar stratosphere where she so deserves to be!"

Before launching into her original recipes, Shauna encapsulates an almost 400-year history of the vanilla bean into nine points, taking the reader from the Aztecs conquering the Totonac Indians of Mexico in 1519 to Thomas Jefferson, then the U.S. ambassador to France, carrying a bundle of beans home to Monticello in 1789. In 1841 the 12-year-old son of a slave devised a way of hand-pollinating vanilla orchids; his process is still employed today.

She details the various forms of vanilla - yes, you can get it in more than just beans and extracts - provides tasting notes, and fields FAQs: Why is vanilla so expensive? How do I store vanilla? And what is French vanilla?

Her writing is accessible, her directions clear, and her recipes inspiring. I find this book to be pure inspiration. I'm looking forward to trying her Tangy Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta and will certainly be toasting with a Vanilla Martini at some time in the near future.

Vanilla Heaven

This is a book that celebrates chocolate's alter-ego. As I have grown older I have come to appreciate the taste of vanilla. Good vanilla. In fact, I keep vanilla beans in my freezer so I always have them on hand. I make my own vanilla extract because it's cheaper and far, far better than the stuff you buy in the store. The only thing this book used that I didn't have on hand was vanilla paste and you can bet your last bean that I'm going to buy some the next time I place my big flour order. I am very intrigued...

For bakers that don't have a ready supply of beans on hand there is a conversion chart so you can still indulge in the delicious recipes using pure vanilla extract which is readily available in stores. Please, PLEASE use PURE extract. The artificial stuff will just ruin a good recipe and when your treat is all about the vanilla you want the flavor to be true. It is worth the money to buy as good as you can afford so that your baked goods sing with real vanilla flavor.

The book is broken down into sensible chapters with recipes therein using all of the vanilla products. Ms. Sever first explains vanilla, its origins and the reasonings behind using each vanilla enhancement. The recipes are well thought out and easy to follow. I can see myself turning to this book over and over again for baked goods to complement chocolate offerings on dessert buffets. It's a great book to add to a baker's cookbook library.

Pure Yum!!

Twinkie Bundt Cake is the only reason you need to buy this book until you try Vanilla Cloud Cake and Triple Vanilla Pound Cake, Big soft frosted vanilla Sugar Cookies, salted vanilla chip cookies.Okay so you get the picture; I am working my way through the baking chapters and I haven't found a thing to complain about. The recipes are easy to reproduce and the results are flawless. This is a well writen and informative source on everything you ever wanted to know about vanilla.

Best Book for Intermediate ESL

I teach a lot of intermediate and advanced ESL students, and this is an excellent self-study book for them to augment my lessons. 146 Exercises covering each topic. Very accurate English - I even got some wrong answers! Answers in the back of the book, and a useful grammar explanation before each exercise. This is an inexpensive and effective book - highly recommended,

Great book but CD-ROM is for Windows only

This is a great book for Intermediate and Advanced ESL learners. I bought it for a group of Taiwanese students who are learning English and I think it will really be helpful. However, the one major drawback to this book is that the CD that comes with it is only for Windows and not compatible with Macs. I was really excited for my students to all have access to this software on their laptops but one of my students has a Mac which doesn't have Windows and is not able to download the software on his computer. Other buyers should be aware of this limitation before purchasing this product.

I read it in 8 hours non-stop. Now I can go back watching the Chinese drama knowing what to expect. Update - I learned that this story was plagiarized from another writer Da Feng Chui Guo and so I can no longer give high praise :(

Three Lives Three World here

Love this book! Although I had read a summary of another translator this one is more detail and complete. As for the title it is totally different from the original "Three Lives Three world" that everyone whom familiar with the storyline know. If it stay true to the title it would have more readers. I have to dig into a forum regarding a drama currently airing base on this book to find out that this is actual Three lives Three World. Although the name in is literally transplanted it pretty good read!

Love, Love, Love!

This is my first time ever reviewing on Amazon and only because I absolutely loved this book! It helped that I watched a little bit of "Ten miles of peach blossoms" first which made it easier to understand the book in the beginning (and vice versa). Although the main character (Bai Qian) comes off a big arrogant at times I had no problem with it because after being alive for 140,000 years she has a reason to be, especially considering how catty some of the people are towards her. The romance is well played out, and I loved every minute she and Ye Hua were together. There was not much description but it made it for a fast read which was great.
I recommend this if you want something different and enjoy supernatural/mythical/Chinese stories.

In its medieval formulation, speculatio signifies the essentially reflective and imaginative operations of the intellect. Here the world, books, and mind itself are all conceived as specula (mirrors) through which the hermeneutic gaze can gain access to what lies beyond it. “To know is to bend over a mirror where the world is reflected, to descry images reflected from sphere to sphere: the medieval man was always before a mirror, both when he looked around himself and when he surrendered to his own imagination” (Giorgio Agamben, Stanzas). Correlatively, speculative realism, as the term suggests, is characterized by the self-contradictory intensity of a desire for thought that can think beyond itself — a desire that proceeds, like all philosophy, in a twisted and productive relation to the phantasm of the word. Aiming to rise above and tunnel below the thought-being or self-world correlation, speculative realism “depart[s] from the text-centered hermeneutic models of the past and engage[s] in daring speculations about the nature of reality itself” (The Speculative Turn). Speculative Medievalisms, like some weird friar-alchemist in an inexistent romance, plays the erotic go-between for these text-centered and text-eccentric intellectual domains by trying to transmute the space between past and present modes of speculation from shared blindness to love at first sight. Eileen A. Joy teaches at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and her main interests are in Old English literature, cultural studies, embodied affectivities, ethics, and the post/human. She is the founder and co-editor of postmedieval: a journal of medieval cultural studies and the Lead Ingenitor of the BABEL Working Group. She is also the co-editor of The Postmodern Beowulf (West Virginia University Press, 2007) and Cultural Studies of the Modern Middle Ages (Palgrave, 2007). Anna Klosowska is Associate Professor of French at Miami University, editor of Madeleine de l’Aubespine, Selected Poems and Translations (Chicago, 2007) and Queer Love in the Middle Ages (Palgrave, 2005), and editor of Violence Against Women in Medieval Texts (Florida, 1998). Author of over 20 articles on queer theory and premodern literature, she is also on the editorial board of Glossator: Practice and Theory of the Commentary. Nicola Masciandaro teaches at Brooklyn College, is the author of The Voice of the Hammer: The Meaning of Work in Middle English Literature (Notre Dame, 2006), and is also founder and co-editor of Glossator: Practice and Theory of the Commentary. He has published widely on medieval philosophy, mysticism, individuation, geophilosophy, beheading, sorrow, spontaneity, and metal music, among other subjects.
