A Not So Simple Story Told Simply

Everyone has a story but only a few of us can tell it as well as Kevin has in The Plane Story. Reading his story was as entertaining as any story could ever be. After this book you are going to want pictures accompanying everything you read. The art is fantastic and the emotions of the characters jumps right off the pages! As a matter of fact, every element of this book works and makes The Plane Story a wonderful experience. In this format, of a graphic novel, it was refreshing to see the hero be heroic without punching someone out but by rolling with the punches.

A COMPLETE MUST, A REAL WINNER

Reading this book and taking it all in gave me one of my most wonderful days so far of 2011. I couldn't put it down. What a joy and a wonder that someone, Sacco, could sit down, dream such a thing and then execute it to such startling and fresh perfection. Along the way there are lessons to be learned, but they are never preachy and always delivered in the most charming and bittersweet package. The drawings alone pull you in and are worth the price of admission. Please treat yourself to a most inventive and unusual experience. Don't miss this one!

a good story very well drawn

This autobiographical graphic novel really took me by surprise.... A voyage of self discovery by a young artist which, in the process, illuminates a few generations of his family, is a complex story told with simplicity and insight. The art functions very well in its storytelling requirements, but many parts -- especially the parts set in Europe -- are visually fascinating just as well executed and evocative illustrations. Kevin Sacco manages to tell this multi-dimensional story, make you really care about the protagonist (himself) and tied it all together at the end. His virtuosity is impressive, but more than anything, he tells a very good story with memorable characters. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Stuart Shanker is a Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at York University. Dr. Shanker is currently serving as Director of the Milton and Ethel Harris Research Initiative (MEHRI) at York University, a privately funded initiative whose goal is to build on new knowledge of the brain’s development, and help set children (including those with developmental disorders) on the path towards emotional and intellectual health.

 

Dr. Shanker has just been appointed the Director of EPIC: an international initiative created to promote the educational potential in children by enhancing their self-regulation. He has served as the Director of the Council of Human Development for the past ten years; Director of the Canada-Cuba Research Alliance for the past six years; and he was the first President of the Council of Early Child Development in Canada. Over the past decade he has served as an advisor on early child development to government organizations across Canada and the US and countries around the world, among them Australia, Colombia, England, Ireland, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mexico, Northern Ireland, Peru, Romania and Serbia. Most notable among these is his involvement in the creation of the new early learning program in Ontario (viz. "The Pascal Report," for which he also wrote the preface).

Self-regulation is a matter for adults working with /caring for children as much as the children themselves!

Very easy to access this book and dip in and out for wisdom.
Particularly relevant for those working with children placed in out of home care.
Shared elements on recent multi-professional training and a forum - well received - provides another lens for supporting children with complex needs. I particularly liked emphasis on adults around the children modelling their own self-regulation and how we need to do a lot of personal development ourselves if we are going to commence or continue to work with this group of children.

Discovering a new world as told by a baby vampire

In general I'm not a fan of serials- the typical one is just a teaser with a cliffhanger hanger ending that I find very annoying. So far, this series, "Sire & Childe", is anything but annoying. Both part 1 and part 2 provide a solid story, each focusing on a stage of Sam accepting his new nature as a vampire. While you are left eager for the next installment, I found each part satisfying individually as well.

The writing is excellent and flows effortlessly, told from the perspective of Sam. As the reader, we are along for the ride trying to understand the strange, sometimes scary, sometimes sweet, world and circumstances he finds himself in. Part 2 introduces us to the world of vampires and hints at a larger destiny for Sam. For now, he must learn to trust his sire, Darius, and choose whether or not to accept his new nature and let go of his past.

This applies to the first 3 parts of the series. All are dull and plodding and end with no complete story. They read more like child development books than vampire stories, or at least what I expect of vampire stories. The entire time I was reading, I kept mentally urging the author to speed up and get to the action - didn't work. This could be a good series but its just not for me.

I really love this book about vampires. Little Bird as his site called him was abducted right after his turning so confused about himself until his sire Darius takes him away from the clan ( hunters) and gives him time to remember him and what Darius means to little bird a must reed now onto the next book in the series

Entertaining early novel

Having read all of Hewson's books that are set in Rome, I thought I'd try this earlier one. I was not disappointed. While the first 50 pages or so are not an easy read (it's easy to forget who is who), after that the rest was terrific. Hewson is simply a fine writer. If you've enjoyed the Nic Costa series, I highly recommend this stand-alone novel.
