The Best Book on Folk Rock - Period.

By far the most exhaustively researched book on this topic that I know of, and a great read to boot. This work combines the Richie Unterberger's two volumes "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Eight Miles High" into a single eBook, and contains a wealth of updates, as well as a comprehensive playlist/discography with recommended versions and track selections that you can use to explore the music described in the book. For individual artists like Dylan and the Beatles there are many books you can use for more detailed digging, but as a thorough examination of folk rock as a genre, a movement, a cultural phenomenon and a historic period of exciting, unique and iconic music, you will find no better source than this book. Richie's material derives from first person interviews with the artists, backing musicians, producers, engineers, songwriters, record label and radio executives and so forth, supplemented by published sources from critics, local and national publications, some well known such as Rolling Stone and other locally circulated newsletters and fanzines known only to aficionados. Where information and recollections may conflict, Richie avoids speculation and just lays out the differences and allows the reader to assess for himself where the truth may actually reside. Having this Kindle copy on my phone and tablet has been a fun way to revisit information and to review his suggested playlist tracks while I'm shopping for music to add to my collection. good thorough review of the folk and folk-rock era

I really enjoyed this read! I love most of the music covered in this history book, and love reading the stories behind the artists and their contributions. It took me some time to finish reading it as it is very thorough, and sounds like it may be a college course textbook, created by combining two separate books that resulted from the publisher thinking the combined volumes would be too big for the bookstore customer. Fortunately, my Kindle accommodated the full volume, and didn't seem to weigh any more after downloading!

Complete and Authorative

Very well researched and enlightening. It gets bogged down a bit with discussions of people and groups that only serious collectors would care about. Overall, very well done and I would recommend it highly for anyone who enjoys this genre.
