I am fluent in Spanish and I felt bad that anybody had to use this

I am fluent in Spanish and I felt bad that anybody had to use this. All of my classmates struggled with this book. Make copies from the library at the school instead.

One of the worst ways to learn Spanish.
By Hector Plaza
A friend of mine has to use this book for her first Spanish course at Hunter College and I've been trying to help her through it. First of all this book has no learning curve to it. They should go through more basics without throwing so many new words(each chapter and without explanations) that new students can't possibly know without prior instruction.

Second, it doesn't help trying to learn a new language and then not having the sufficient trust in your own ability, because you can't follow what the book is saying.

And last but one of the MOST important parts, I understand what the author is TRYING to say, in respect to, Spanish is different from culture to culture, BUT it is impossible to learn Spanish using every single culture. Every culture of Spanish has different ways of saying the same words, they have different pronunciations, and they even talk at a faster or slower rate. I spoke with my Grandmother who is a professor in my home country and she admits that when they take Spanish as a language they try to teach it as close to the original Spanish, which comes from Spain, as possible.

This book also has many errors in it, reading through the questions in chapter 5 made me feel like the author/editors got lazy and just used a translator. I don't mean to bash, and I don't want to be too harsh. There are many ways that this book can improve, such as simple things like more exercises in the beginning for vocabulary building.

I want to put an additional beware tag for Hunter College Students: the author of this book is the head of the department, which is why you will have to put up with this, if you really want to learn Spanish, be prepared to work hard and look to outside sources for help.

This textbook ruined my life
By Faccia Bella
Someone said it best...this textbook is a disorganized mess. It does not follow the conventional model of a textbook in that it doesn't start easy (or basic) and get harder. There is no rhyme or reason to it yet EVERY beginning Spanish professor in our school uses it. It's just awful. I have to use two other resources to make up for the gaping holes in this program. I fear for my GPA!

I'M PREGNANT, ON THE RUN, AND WEARING HIS RING...

HANNAH

How the hell did I get here?

Oh, right - Daniel "Dust" Grayson. Scariest, sexiest man alive. The only man who's ever stolen my panties, lured me into his bed, and left me begging for more.

This isn't what you're thinking. Yes, he's an outlaw. Trouble incarnate on two towering legs and the hottest smirk south of the Mason-Dixon line. But I'm not in a world of hurt because he's President of the Deadly Pistols MC, or because my big brother is his right hand man - hello, drama!

No, Dust tried to save me from myself. I can't let my secrets kill him.

It's time to forget everything: his love, his kisses, raising the baby he'll never know together.

Never wed an outlaw. A broken heart was my wedding present, and now it's my only defense...

DUST

Hannah was my biggest mistake. Ain't every day a man claims a girl, shoves his ring on her finger, and tells her she's his 'til the end of time. I had it all, blind to the storm approaching.

Then she disappeared. She forgot about us.

I'll die before I let her. Darlin', I'm coming.

Don't care if my best friend is her kin, and he wants to rip my head off.

Don't care if she's a hostage to the meanest crew I ever laid eyes on.

Don't care if I have to move heaven, hell, and everything in between to bring her home.

If Hannah's a mistake, I'm owning up. Every single inch of her, every kiss, every damned day. She made me crave the whole package, a wife and kids, like a man needs air.

I can't stop. I won't go back. She's coming back to my arms, or I'll rip this wicked world limb from limb.

This is a stand alone romance novel with a hard-to-get runaway bride like no other! No cliffhangers, no cheating, and SCORCHING heat advisory. Yes to babies, outlaws, and Happily Ever Afters. This is Dust and Hannah's story in the Deadly Pistols MC series.

Bad boy bonus! For a limited time, this special edition includes another complete Deadly Pistols novel, Never Kiss an Outlaw.

Dusty and Hannah....love love loved it!!!!
By MLS
Could not wait to get my hands on this book! With the little snippet we got from the last Pistols book....I was excited to read more about Dusty and Hannah and what was going on between the two of them! Dust is the president of the Deadly Pistols MC and he's never thought about anything but the MC and even more so never thought he'd be settling down. Hannah is one of his club Brothers little sister, which makes her off limits and in a way forbidden. But whenever these two are around eachother ,it's hot.
War is coming for the Pistols while trying to take down a rival MC and that means Dusty needs his head in control.
Hannah hasn't been truthful with everyone about how she can live the lifestyle she does, and let me tell you the walls are closing in and it's not pretty.
When these two finally get together, they are explosive. But Hannah knows that staying will only bring harm to those she loves. Dusty stops at nothing to bring her home. I loved this book, and was not disappointed!!!! Great series....author knows her stuff with these MC books!!!

Hannah has it all the brains the mansion the dream job and a life free of childhood drama or so it seems.... what the people who love her don't know is that she made a deal with the devil himself to get it and has been paying the price ever since. Dom is the Mafia leader that loaned Hannah the money to start her dream company and he is asking for miracles in money laundering that Hannah isn't sure she can pull off or he is threatening to kill her and everyone she loves. Dusty is Hannah's brother's best friend and MC president and she has had a crush on him for years but when things start to get steamy between them she tries to push him away because she is afraid to get close to anyone with the threat of Dom over her head. When Dusty finally breaks down her walls and they form a relationship he comes home one night to find two of Dom's thugs in the house with Hannah and ends up killing them and demanding to know the truth which Hannah is only too happy to finally reveal to the man she loves. Dusty and Hannah get married and things seem to be going fine until Dom tries to have her abducted and she runs scared for 7 months until Dusty and the MC find her at the same time that Dom and his thugs do while she is in labor with a baby no one knew about. The suspense and the fast pace of this novel are amazing and unable to resist absolutely loved it!

Stunning illustrations depict an original fantasy story in this captivating graphic novel. As Rohan, a young Japanese manga artist, is drawing, he meets a mysterious, beautiful woman who tells him of a cursed 200-year-old painting. The painting was created using the blackest ink ever known, which came from a 1,000-year-old tree that the painter had cut down without the approval of the Emperor. The painter was executed for this, but the painting was saved from destruction by a curator of the Louvre. A decade later, Rohan visits Paris and asks the museum to unearth the painting from deep within its archives—but he is completely unprepared for the power of the curse he has unleashed.

Review
"Mischievous humor. A great find."  —Library Journal on the previous books in the series

"A great story of a hearing-impaired young man trying to find his way."  —Miami Herald on the previous books in the series

"It's a straightforward, beautifully drawn, and delicately colored tale, filled with emotional bursts, sudden death, and the scent of eternity. It's also a great deal of fun." —Foreword (June 2012)

"Wondrous insanity." —www.TCJ.com (The Comics Journal)

"A must read! With its attention to the artistic process and the almost INDIANA JONESesque mystery of an ancient relic, mixed with a little bit of Japanese fairy tale whimsy, Rohan at the Louvre is a truly unique reading experience." —www.AintItCool.com

"The previous . . . title in the Louvre's distinguished graphic novel series, The Sky Over the Louvre, set an even higher standard than the first three high quality titles, and Araki's gorgeous ghost story easily matches them all for plot, drawing chops and emotional gut-punch. This excellent volume is recommended for fans of extreme manga artishness and for horror otaku." —Library Journal (May 2012)

"Araki's book will be relished by readers who are fans of the manga format, especially those interested in art." —VOYA magazine

"Published in a large hardcover format this unique title should find an audience. Should be popular with manga fans." —School Library Journal (July 2012)

Better for people who already like Araki's works, but an interesting and worthwhile comic
By Diana D.
I'm a huge fan of Hirohiko Araki and his comics, so when I heard that Rohan at the Louvre was being published in English, there was no question I'd buy it; in fact, I already had it in the Japanese magazine serialization and the hardcover French edition. It's a five-star for me, or for several other groups of people, but there are some problems with this volume regardless.

It's a gorgeous volume; the hardcover binding isn't too hard or too flimsy-feeling, like a nicer picture book. The printing quality is excellent, and while the author is known and loved for occasionally garish color use, the beautiful coloration on the interior pages is soft and dreamy, with colors reminiscent of early 1900s children's books accented with splashes of blacks and brights. If you're a fan of Hirohiko Araki's art, you want this regardless of whether or not you like the story as the single most inexpensive "artbook" you'll ever find.

The story is a decent standalone; its themes are similar to some of the other Rohan short story one-shots that haven't been published in English, but that's not necessarily a drawback. What is a drawback is that you really will get far more out of this comic if you have already read some of Araki's other work including Rohan Kishibe as a character, none of which has ever been published in English. There's a charming scene where three characters from Diamond is Unbreakable show up to say a few lines; for a dedicated Araki fan this is a wonderful shout-out, but for someone who hasn't read those comics, you might be left wondering who these people are. In fact, while Rohan's "ability" is explained very simply in the first few pages, its name is never given; if you're a pre-existing fan you might know that it's Heaven's Door, but when Rohan later refers to it AS "Heaven's Door", it's not explained, nor are some of the mechanics of how Heaven's Door works which wind up being crucial to the comic. I loaned my copy to someone who had no previous knowledge of Araki's works, and while they enjoyed it, they were a bit confused. Even so, it's a nice self-contained story, and the Louvre setting elements add to the story rather than feeling like they were shoehorned in just for product placement.

As far as the English editing and translation goes... The translation itself is quite good; it preserves the distinctive speaking style of the original comic while still being readable (delightfully so, in fact) in English, and the section in the back about the Louvre collections is a good primer for those who've never been there. However, as a long-time manga reader some of the editing is a bit sub-par. There's a few typos near the end, and some rather dubious typeface usage that I really don't agree with. The fact that the dialogue and the SFX subtitles are all set in the same typeface is a bit jarring as well.

I'd recommend this to anybody who enjoys the art of Hirohiko Araki, or to anybody with an interest both in artwork and in horror stories (because this IS a rather creepy horror story, with some pages full of strange gore). It isn't a perfect book, nor is it a perfect edition, but it's still good enough to have a place on my shelf for years.

The usual Araki greatness, but larger pages could've benefited from more color.
By romevi
I will preface by saying that this book assumes you're caught up with Jojo up to the end of the fourth arc. Being that this book is released by the Louvre publishing company, it's readily available for print at the museum and online shops. But passers-by may be confused by its plot, if they become intrigued by the artwork alone. And they should; Araki's stuff is some of the best and most detailed in the manga world. Sometimes, however, it can be TOO detailed for the smaller manga panels, but in this large paper print it works handsomely.

As many readers familiar with the arcs may guess, Rohan at the Louvre is its own side story that has nothing to do with the main series. Rohan's adventure happens in two parts. The first half seems to happen before the events in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The second half happens either during or after the events of the fourth arc, so it seems.

The story itself is very interesting and captivating. I'm usually not a fan of side stories because I feel they're not as polished or intricate as the main story. Readers are already so heavily invested in the main series that side stories usually get in the way, often harming a character by delving too much into their background for their own good. But this side story is great, and really can act as one of the subplots of the main story, since there are so many anyway.

As an amateur author, I admire Araki's mastery over his characters. He's created hundreds, and each has their own unique personality setting them apart from the rest; even the smallest of characters who appear for no more than a few panels have some depth.
The artwork is gorgeous, as you'd expect from anything by Araki. Glorious poses are all there, but I feel that sometimes some of the coloring looks either washed out or like there's some bleeding. With such freedom of page size, Araki could've benefited from giving his pages more color, or else contracting someone to do it for him.

Of course, the plot takes extreme liberties with its environment. Seeing as Araki has infiltrated the Louvre and its secrets, the publishing company saw fit to add an addendum at the end that highlights that the work is entirely fictional, as well as its depiction of the museum. Like we didn't already know that.
Ah, well. The museum's gotta protect its integrity, even if readers of its published works already know fact from fiction.

A great and must-read for fans of Araki. People unfamiliar with the source material may be confused--actually, they WILL be confused--but the artwork itself is enough to admire. Still, I highly, HIGHLY recommend newbies to read Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Unfortunately, only the third arc has been translated (thanks to Viz), but there are dedicated fan "scanlations" (scanned translations) that have brought Araki's masterwork to western audiences. I won't mention any sites due to possible legal conflicts, but they exist. Use your preferred search engine to find them. They're worth the read and time-suck.

Rohan Rocks!
By Tim Lasiuta
I loved this book. "Rohan at the Louvre" reminds me of a Poe poem brought to life, almost the Casque of Amontilado, this time, the Art of Araki brings the same intense feeling of dread, release, and love lost.

The art is stunning, and the story is evocative of much, much, more. The question of what art is, is central to the story. What emotion does art evoke in its' viewers? What inspired the art? What part does the art play in history? The last painting by Nizaemon was so much more, was a mystery unlike any other. Reading this reminds me of the Black Museum radio series, actually, this could be an episode of such.

The book is a good example of exactly why NBM has risen to the top of the graphic novel realm. Their Papercutz products are award winning, and these should be too.

This comes highly recommended for art (almost Gil Kanish), story telling, and the international favor it brings to our book shelves.

A good book for the beginners.
By J.Y. Xing
This textbook is a good introduction on airbreathing propulsion and rocket propulsion systems but remains very basic. If you don't know anything about aerospace propulsion but you has some basics knowledge in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, this is a good point to start. However, this book clearly doesn't worth the listed price (about $140-150) since more advanced books are available for a comparable price.

Hiroshima Nagasaki: The Real Story of the Atomic Bombings and Their Aftermath, by Paul Ham

In this harrowing history of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, Paul Ham argues against the use of nuclear weapons, drawing on extensive research and hundreds of interviews to prove that the bombings had little impact on the eventual outcome of the Pacific War. In this gripping narrative, Ham demonstrates convincingly that misunderstandings and nationalist fury on both sides led to the use of the bombs. Ham also gives powerful witness to its destruction through the eyes of eighty survivors, from twelve-year-olds forced to work in war factories to wives and children who faced the holocaust alone. Hiroshima Nagasaki presents the grisly unadorned truth about the bombings, blurred for so long by postwar propaganda, and transforms our understanding of one of the defining events of the twentieth century.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In 1945, in the midst of secrecy about the development of the atomic bomb and ongoing debates over the most “efficient” way to end the war with Japan, American leaders made the fateful decision to launch nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The bombings certainly stopped the war and destroyed its targeted cities, killing more than 100,000 people, but had they been necessary? Ham presents a forceful argument that the bombing was excessive and unjustified. Alternate chapters recount the building tension toward the awful decision by the Allies and the day-to-day lives of starving Japanese caught between their aggressive emperor and military and sure retaliation. In this sweeping and comprehensive history, Ham details the geopolitical considerations and huge egos behind evolving theories of warfare, the burgeoning killing technology of biological and nuclear war on the part of the Japanese and the Allies as well as the shameful tactic of dehumanizing the Japanese enemy. But most powerful are the eyewitness accounts of 80 survivors, ordinary people caught up in the events of war, who felt the terrible destruction of a nuclear blast and its aftermath of radiation sickness. --Vanessa Bush

An Important and Interesting Book; with Caveats
By Theodore F. Schaaf
This is an important book on the Manhattan Program, the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the surrender of Japan and the aftermath of the bombings.

However, think the author has a bias that dropping the atomic bombs did not contribute to the ending of the war. Am not convinced that this is correct. He asserts that Truman would not have authorized the invasion of Japan. He said that this is the consensus view; but, this is not clear from the text or the footnotes. Also, he pointed out that the atomic bombs had less influence on Japanese leaders than the rapid Russian advances. This is probably true for the army generals, who were clearly very narrow minded. Not so clear for Hirohito, who had some scientific credentials and appears to have a much broader view of the world.

The book gives quite a few examples the self delusion and incompetence of the Japanese government, which could have contributed to the continuation of the war.

It is not clear to me, that Japan would have quickly surrendered without the atomic bombs. If not, the alternatives are likely to have been much worse than the A-bombs. If the war had lasted even another three months, how many millions of Japanese would have starved to death or died in a Soviet invasion of Hokkaido or a US invasion of Kyushu. Not to mention deaths in China and South East Asia.

The horror of the atomic bombings allowed the Japanese people to cast themselves as the victims of WWII. This has kept Japan from facing up to the many criminal acts of their own government. The Japanese people were victims; but, of their own government and army.

Denial of historical fact for the apparent sake of controversy destroys the value of this book
By James Bowen
"Hiroshima Nagasaki" is a lightweight treatment by prolific journalist author Paul Ham of a very complex issue, namely, the strategic and moral justifications for dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August 1945. Six days after the dropping of the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, the Japanese surrendered.

The justification for the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is likely to be disputed indefinitely. Possibly spurred by the need to promote book sales by creating controversy, Ham makes the extraordinary claim in this book that "not a shred of evidence supports the contention that the Japanese leadership surrendered in direct response to the atomic bombs". On the established historical evidence, it is reasonably clear that two factors were decisive in producing the Japanese surrender. The first was the decision of the Soviet Union to declare war on Japan on 8 August 1945. The second was the face-saving opportunity presented by the dropping of the atomic bombs. Neither factor can be simply swept under the carpet, as Ham does with the atomic bombs. By doing so, Ham destroys any historical value that this book might otherwise have possessed. With the 70th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs occurring in August 2015, and the likelihood of this book being used as another club to belt the United States, I believe that Ham's book requires closer analysis than it has been receiving from some of Ham's adoring but historically challenged fans.

Let me briefly outline the strategic situation at the time when the atomic bombs were dropped. By July 1945, Japan's military and industrial resources had either been destroyed or dispersed widely and largely concealed from air attack. The Americans were finding it very difficult to locate sizeable military or industrial targets for their B-29 bombers to attack with conventional bombs.

In April 1945, the Japanese Suzuki government had prepared a war policy called Ketsugo which was a refinement of the Shosango victory plan for the defence of the home islands to the last man, woman and child. These plans would prepare the Japanese people psychologically to die as a nation in defence of their homeland. Even children, including girls, would be trained to use makeshift lethal weapons, and exhorted to sacrifice themselves by killing an American invader. To implement this policy of training children to kill, soldiers attended Japanese schools and trained even small children in the use of weapons such as bamboo spears.

The American government was aware from intelligence intercepts of the chilling implications of these Japanese defensive plans. Intelligence reports indicated that the Japanese would probably be able to muster two million troops and between six to eight thousand aircraft of all types for the defence of the four home islands against a traditional amphibious invasion. The dispersal of these military resources across Japan, and their careful concealment, would provide the Americans with no opportunity to destroy them from the air. The Ketsugo policy placed heavy reliance on suicide attacks on American troops and their covering warships. For this purpose, several thousand aircraft would be adapted as flying bombs for suicide attacks. Many of these Japanese aircraft to be used in kamikaze attacks would not be front-line aircraft, but they did not need to be for kamikaze flying bomb attacks. The Japanese worked on the basis that kamikaze attacks were justified if one in five manned flying bombs reached the intended target. Other methods of suicide attack being developed included dynamite-filled "crash boats", human-guided torpedoes, manned rocket-powered flying bombs (similar to the "Baka" rocket plane used against American ships at Okinawa), and specially trained ground suicide units carrying explosives. In addition, the invading Americans would have to face a civilian population drilled in guerrilla tactics.

The Americans had every reason to be deeply disturbed when they learned about Japanese plans to defend the home islands by massive suicide attacks on American amphibious forces. The kamikaze suicide attacks on Allied ships at Okinawa had alone produced a horrifying toll: 34 Allied warships sunk ; 368 Allied ships damaged (some fit only for scrap); 4,900 Allied sailors killed; and 4,874 Allied sailors wounded.

The American government would also have been aware in early 1945 that Japan possessed an arsenal of deadly chemical and biological weapons of mass destruction that it had been developing and using against Chinese troops and civilians since Japan initiated its unprovoked and brutal war against China in 1937. Despite the extraordinary secrecy surrounding American acquisition of Japan's very advanced chemical and biological warfare technology after the surrender, we know that American General Joseph Stillwell had been Chief of Staff to Chinese leader Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and that General Douglas MacArthur provided Japan's chemical and biological warfare military scientists with immunity from prosecution as war criminals in return for their deadly secrets being turned over to the American Army. Unleashed on unprotected American invasion troops on Okinawa, Japan's chemical and biological weapons would have caused massive American casualties. Although acknowledging Japan's use of ghastly chemical and biological warfare weapons against the Chinese, Ham provides more evidence of the lightness of his research when he offers the following absurd, and wholly unsupported, opinion in an endnote:

"The Allies would not learn the extent of Japan's biological warfare capability - that it planned the mass production of cholera, typhoid and paratyphoid bacilli weapons, and had conducted experiments on human beings, mostly Chinese - until after the war".

On 26 July 1945, the Allies issued the Potsdam Declaration. Its purpose was to hasten Japan's surrender without the need for a difficult and very costly amphibious assault on the Japanese home islands. The declaration warned Japan that it faced "prompt and utter destruction" unless the Japanese swiftly agreed to an unconditional surrender. On July 28, Prime Minister Suzuki announced that Japan intended to "ignore" the Potsdam Declaration. Underlying Suzuki's rejection of the Potsdam Declaration was Emperor Hirohito's stubborn resolve to continue the war until he received a guarantee from the Allies that his status as emperor would be preserved and that he would not be tried as a war criminal. There is no evidence that Hirohito felt any genuine concern for the suffering of Japanese civilians as the war encroached on their lives. See the Pulitzer Prize-winning Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan (2000) by historian and Japan scholar Professor Paul Bix, and especially, the chapter "Delayed Surrender".

When informed that Japan intended to ignore the Potsdam Declaration, President Truman was faced with a dilemma. There was little scope for further conventional bombing. He was left with the choice of ordering an invasion of Japan's home islands or using the atomic bomb. Rather than risk the predicted 1,000,000 American battle casualties in an amphibious assault on Japan, President Truman elected to use the atomic bomb. There can be no doubt that the American public would have chosen the atomic bomb in 1945 rather than one million American casualties. Paul Ham attempts to counter this argument by claiming that American military leaders had predicted only 31,000 casualties in the first 30 days following an amphibious invasion of Japan's home islands. This is an absurd argument. The first Allied amphibious landing was expected to be on the defended shores of the smaller southern home island of Kyushu. Based on massive American casualties incurred over eighty-two days in capturing tiny Okinawa, it is quite possible that the 31,000 Allied casualties would occur on that smaller home island Kyushu alone, and possibly, in the first thirty days; but there were three more home islands still to be captured, including the largest home island Honshu.

In deciding to use the atomic bombs to save as many as a million American casualties, President Truman was entitled to weigh the grave risk that a country prepared to fight to the last man, woman, and child would also be prepared to unleash deadly chemical and bacterial weapons on American troops. Is it so difficult for a journalist like Paul Ham to research adequately the reasons that must have weighed heavily on President Harry Truman's mind when he decided to use the atomic bomb on a recalcitrant Japan in August 1945. I could find no mention of Japan's Ketsugo or Shosango victory plans in Ham's lightweight treatment of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Following Prime Minister Suzuki's rejection of the Potsdam Declaration, the first target was Hiroshima, a city on Japan's Inland Sea. At this time, Hiroshima was the headquarters of Japan's 2nd General Army. On 4 August 1945, American aircraft dropped leaflets on Hiroshima warning the citizens to expect terrible destruction to be visited upon their city because Japan had refused to surrender. Although many civilians had already been evacuated to the country, this warning was largely ignored. On August 6, the first atomic bomb was dropped on this city. At Hiroshima, 60,000 Japanese died and a similar number were injured.

The emotive impact of the use of an atomic bomb on a Japanese city, and its usefulness as a stick with which to beat the United States, has caused many people to ignore the fact that more people died in the conventional bomb attack on Tokyo on the night of 8/9 March 1945. At Tokyo, on this one night, the bombs and resulting firestorm killed 80,000 people and injured 44,000.

On the evening of 8 August 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and on 9 August Soviet troops invaded the Japanese puppet state Manchukuo.

On 9 August 1945, when the first atomic bomb had evoked no response from Japan, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, a port with naval installations. The primary target on this day had been the city of Kokura where a huge army arsenal was located. Thick clouds over Kokura forced diversion of the B-29 with the second bomb to Nagasaki. At Nagasaki, 36,000 were killed and about 60,000 wounded.

The combined shock of these events caused Emperor Hirohito to intervene as commander-in-chief of the Japanese military and order the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War, also known as "The Big Six", to accept the terms for ending the war that the Allies had stipulated in the Potsdam Declaration. "The Big Six" were the Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ministers of War and Navy, and Chiefs of Army and Navy General Staffs. After six more days of behind-the-scenes negotiations and a failed army initiated coup d'etat, Hirohito gave a recorded radio address to the nation on August 15. In the radio address, called the Gyokuon-ho ("Jewel Voice Broadcast"), he announced the effective surrender of Japan, although he did not use the word "surrender". Ham is directly contradicted by Professor Bix in "Hirohito and the making of modern Japan" at page 529. Bix cites the text of the emperor's public broadcast on 15 August 1945, which specifically refers to the destructive power of the atomic bombs in these words "the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb" as justification for ending the war. In this speech to the people of Japan, the emperor makes no reference to the Soviet Union having declared war on Japan. In a later and separate speech directed to the Japanese armed forces on 17 August 1945, the emperor makes no reference to the atomic bombs as a reason for ending the war but justifies ending the war on the ground that the Soviet Union has declared war on Japan. So the emperor has very clearly stated that both the atomic bombings and the entry of the Soviet Union into the war justified ending the war. Ham acknowledges that Emperor Hirohito cited in the Gyokuon-ho surrender speech on 15 August the use of "a new and most cruel bomb" by the American enemy as a reason for ending the war but fails to appreciate the illogicality of his claim that the atomic bombs played no part in Japan's surrender.

Professor Bix states that the dropping of the atomic bombs, and the simultaneous entry of the Soviet Union into the war against Japan, were described as "gifts from the gods" by Navy Minister Mitsumasa Yonai (page 509). By mid-1945, Hirohito and his chief political adviser Koichi Kido were becoming increasingly concerned at growing alienation of public support for continuation of the war. District governors and police chiefs were reporting that the Japanese people were war-weary and despondent, and that popular hostility to the emperor and his government was increasing rapidly. Faced with these serious domestic pressures, Hirohito and his councillors welcomed the dropping of the atomic bombs and the Soviet entry into the war as a convenient excuse to accept the terms of the Potsdam Declaration and, at the same time, to provide the emperor with the credit for ending the war (page 523).

Although the casualties from the two atomic bombs are disturbing, they almost certainly represent a very tiny fraction of the Japanese who would have died if the whole population of Japan, civilian as well as military, adults and children, had been mobilised by the Suzuki government to die as a nation in defence of Japan.

The atomic bombs were dropped on two cities of military significance (a) because the Emperor of Japan and his government refused to surrender and were preparing the Japanese people for a fight to the death as a nation, (b) because there were no readily discernible large military or industrial targets available for conventional air attack, and (c) because the Allies faced the prospect of incurring horrendous battle casualties from a conventional amphibious invasion of Japan.

Disappointed
By Conan
I'm struggling with this. Chapter 2, an overview of the Japanese cities, nearly put me to sleep. It seemed completely inessential, something that might have been accomplished in a page or two, not twenty. The author, to put it mildly, has a rambling, effusive manner of writing that is simply all over the place. I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. The beginning is so promising. However, I will continue. Glad I checked it out of the library.

The Return of Ordinary Capitalism: Neoliberalism, Precarity, Occupy, by Sanford F. Schram

As Frances Fox Piven and Richard Cloward argued in the early seventies, in a capitalist economy, social welfare policies alternatingly serve political and economic ends as circumstances dictate. In moments of political stability, governments emphasize a capitalistic work ethic (even if it means working a job that will leave one impoverished); when times are less politically stable, states liberalize welfare policies to recreate the conditions for political acquiescence. Sanford Schram argues in this new book that each shift produces its own path dependency even as it represents yet another iteration of what he (somewhat ironically) calls "ordinary capitalism," where the changes in market logic inevitably produce changes in the structure of the state. In today's ordinary capitalism, neoliberalism is the prevailing political-economic logic that has contributed significantly to unprecedented levels of inequality in an already unequal society. As the new normal, neoliberalism has marketization of the state as a core feature, heightening the role of economic actors, especially financiers, in shaping public policy. The results include increased economic precarity among the general population, giving rise to dramatic political responses on both the Left and the Right (Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party in particular). Schram examines neoliberalism's constraints on politics as well as social and economic policy and gives special attention to the role protest politics plays in keeping alive the possibilities for ordinary people to exercise political agency. The Return of Ordinary Capitalism concludes with political strategies for working through--rather than around--neoliberalism via a radical, rather than status-quo-reinforcing, incrementalism.

Review

"Ihe Return of Ordinary Capitalism is remarkable in what it holds together to illuminate our time: critical theory, empirical accounting of contemporary inequality and precarity, case studies on social welfare and education, and attunement to the neoliberalization of everyday life. One need not agree with Schram's arguments to be profoundly instructed and moved by them. Clear, unpretentious and unafraid, this is a work for Occupy's next round." -- Wendy Brown, University of California, Berkeley

"Sanford Schram focuses especially on recent turns in American social policy but in the process he has written an excellent synthesis of the Left analysis and critique of the contemporary American political economy." -- Frances Fox Piven, The Graduate Center, City University of New York

"In The Return of Ordinary Capitalism, Sanford Schram delivers an acute, unflinching, and provocative analysis of our shared conjunctural predicament. In the face of the brutal restoration of business-as-usual capitalism and the widespread intensification of neoliberalized rule, Schram matches incisive analytical critique with a plea to push beyond the politics of left melancholia. The charge here is not only to envisage-but to grasp-radical potentialities on the terrain of the here and now." -- Jamie Peck, author of Constructions of Neoliberal Reason

"Schram's volume is a beam of light by one of today's most incisive theorists of neoliberalism and struggles of resistance and transformation. Whether he is discussing changes in social welfare policy, education, the Occupy movement, or his proposal for radical incrementalism, his writing takes us on journeys that are invigorating, insightful, and indispensable." -- Rom Coles, Social Justice Institute, Australian Catholic University, author of Visionary Pragmatism: Radical and Ecological Democracy

"The essays gathered together in this book are extraordinarily useful for change makers who seek to understand what it is they are up against in twenty-first-century America that has made effectively altering the status quo and rebalancing the relations of power more and more difficult to achieve."
-- Janice Fine, Rutgers University in Perspectives on Politics

"Schram moves seamlessly between American political development, path dependence, political economy, social movement analysis, and discourse analysis to develop a powerful argument about our current political and economic moment."
-- Mark Sawyer, University of California, Los Angeles in Perspectives on Politics
